We live in a world in which information systems are becoming a crucial part of business’ operating procedures. Technology like CRM and ERP systems are continuously being improved and becoming more complex. The newest system that has entered the market is from Progress Software and is called Progress Responsive Process Management (RPM). This system combines business process management, complex event processing and network monitoring technologies and is the first integration of this type. Besides the fact that this new system combines all three technologies it is also unique because it is responsive in real time. This system is able to do this by detecting changes in conditions and important events in data as it streams (1). According to a statement that Progress released one of the biggest benefits of this RPM system is that “users can ‘see and automate the response to what is about to happen in their business, not just what has happened’” (2). In theory this new system will be providing businesses with the opportunity to not only make decisions about events that have happened but also about events that are going to be happening in the future. This provides businesses with the opportunity to be one step ahead, providing them with a competitive edge.
On Progress Software’s website the advertisement for this new RPM system has the slogan “Continuously improve your business’ operational responsiveness” (3). Additionally, the website claims the benefits of this new system are that companies will gain real time visibility, be able to immediately sense and respond, and continuously improve their business’ process (4). As apparent the defining quality of this new system is the immediate access to information that users are provided with. While this new technology is going to be helpful to numerous businesses the article stated that it is going to be extremely useful in fields such as the airline industry. This is because this is an industry where real time information is very important. If airline companies are able to monitor their flights they will be able to notice delays earlier and consequently alert customers and make changes.
Through use of the RPM system businesses will be able to boost efficiency because they will always be provided with up to the minute data. If used to help with information such as flight delays then this system will also be boosting customer service as well. I believe that the combination of these three systems will be a great benefit for companies because it will help to consolidate various outlets of information. Additionally, I think if effective in its primary locations this RPM system will quickly spread to a variety of different business. This system has the potential to be helpful in all different industries because all companies can benefit from having quicker, more consolidated and efficient information. Having the ability to know about events before they happen will be a huge help in avoiding or managing arising problems. Overall the RPM system will help to relay important information, allow for quicker problem solving, and enhance the overall progress of the companies.

In today's economy, gaining a sustainable competitive advantage is very important. Companies need to be able to establish an edge, some type of method of cutting costs, boosting revenues, or attracting new customers so it can run and grow. I believe that this RPM system will be able to do all three of these initiatives. First, I agree that giving customers up to the minute information will help to retain their business and keep them satisfied. In addition, companies will be able to prevent issues from happening instead of having to establish a solution, which will ultimately cut costs and boost revenues simultaneously. This is truly a revolutionary system, one that I am confident will become increasingly popular among companies looking for that new upper hand.
ReplyDeleteI just find it amazing how much business-oriented technology has developed that now IS professionals can see results of their systems in real time. I liked Mary Beth's point that it makes it easier for companies to make decisions about the future based on present data, rather than decisions for the present based on past data. This system has great potential to be used successfully in any area of business.
ReplyDeleteUp to the minute information is crucial not just in business but in any field. Anything concerning Info Systems or technology will constantly be changing, staying caught up on news for example is crucial for any company that hopes to be a leader in their respective business. For the RPM system the up to date data will benefit the developers and the users of the product. Moves like these are the ones that like Christian said give a company competitive advantage. I think that this new system will succeed because it is based on better data, better data will always allow you to create better more efficient systems.
ReplyDeleteThe innovative RPM system will change the business world forever if it operates as efficiently and effectively as it is intended to. Many of the systems that businesses implement cost millions and only give businesses a look at what they were doing right or wrong in the past. Companies then must use business intelligence to decide how to correct these wrongs or continue the rights in their business by creating a business plan. Next they must test and evaluate the plan. Finally they will implement the plan and monitor the results. Although these systems allow companies to achieve a desired end result, these systems come with a lag time laced with inefficient ways that can cost the company sufficient sales and customers. The new RPM system should shorten this process and improve a company's efficiency and effectiveness not only in the past and present but also in the future.
ReplyDeleteI just wrote a huge comment and it did not go through.... another example of ineffective technology. Anyway, if RPM systems work as efficiently as they are intended to, they will change the business world forever. Most systems in place today cost businesses millions but only allow businesses to look at past results to help them understand their past rights and wrongs. From these results, business then must apply business intelligence to decide on a plan to improve their business based on the system's results. Next the plan must be tested and evaluated. Finally the plan will be implemented and monitored for progress. This process involves a lag time laced with inefficiency that can cost a business vital sales and costumers. The new RPM system should shrink this lag time and therefore significantly help businesses improve their results not only in their past and present, but in their future.
